Action for an age-friendly recovery
Today, The Older People's Commissioner for Wales have published Leave No-one Behind: Action for an age-friendly recovery, which sets out the action needed to respond to the most pressing challenges facing older people and the longer-term work required to ensure that older people are not left behind in the reconstruction of our society over the coming months and beyond.
Many of the calls for action in the report are drawn from discussions at engagement sessions with older people, community groups and others, together with evidence and analysis carried out by my office. There are actions which The Older People's Commissioner for Wales believe Welsh Government needs to take, and have also highlighted areas for action by public bodies and others, as well as indicating some of the areas where The Older People's Commissioner for Wales are taking action and working with others to achieve change.
It is clear from the engagement with older people that many continue to endure extremely difficult circumstances due to the pandemic, which have taken their toll and left some feeling worried about what the future holds and without the confidence needed to get out and about and reengage with their communities.
The Older People's Commissioner for Wales have also been concerned, and remain so, about the extent to which older people’s rights have been protected and the need to ensure that rights that have been removed are reinstated.
Despite these difficult circumstances, the pandemic has also shown some of the best of who we are.
They have heard so many inspiring stories of how people have been helping each other, of the way in which community organisations and many public bodies have responded quickly to what is needed and been creative in finding new ways to reach, connect and help. It is crucial that we harness these positive experiences into the next phase of the pandemic and engage and enable older people to play their part in a recovery from Covid-19 which utilises the experience and expertise of each and every generation and takes the next steps together.
A time of uncertainty and challenge lies ahead, and we need to ensure that lessons are learnt from the experiences of the last few months.
Older people’s rights need to be better protected, and where they have been removed, reinstated. The exclusion that many older people have experienced and felt must not be allowed to continue.
Those that have suffered loss of loved ones need to be supported as they grieve, and those who have been kept apart from loved ones re-united. As plans are made across Government and public bodies to transition from this phase of the pandemic, the pledge must be to ‘leave no-one behind’.
The Older People's Commissioner for Wales will be holding an online discussion and debate on ‘Leaving No-One Behind’ on the International Day of Older Persons, Thursday 1st October 10am - 12noon.
Who are The Older People's Commissioner for Wales?
The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales protects and promotes the rights of older people throughout Wales, scrutinising and influencing a wide range of policy and practice to improve their lives. Providing help and support directly to older people through casework team and works to empower older people and ensure that their voices are heard and acted upon. The Commissioner’s role is underpinned by a set of unique legal powers to support in reviewing the work of public bodies and holding them to account when necessary.
The Commissioner is taking action to end ageism and age discrimination, stop the abuse of older people and enable everyone to age well. The Commissioner wants Wales to be the best place in the world to grow older.

Camau Gweithredu ar gyfer adferiad o blaid pobl hŷn
Heddiw, mae Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru wedi cyhoeddi Leave No-one Behind: Action ar gyfer adferiad sy'n gyfeillgar i oedran, sy'n nodi'r camau sydd eu hangen i ymateb i'r heriau mwyaf dybryd sy'n wynebu pobl hŷn a'r gwaith tymor hwy sy'n ofynnol i sicrhau hynny ni chaiff pobl hŷn eu gadael ar ôl wrth ailadeiladu ein cymdeithas dros y misoedd nesaf a thu hwnt.
Daw llawer o'r galwadau am weithredu yn yr adroddiad o drafodaethau mewn sesiynau ymgysylltu â phobl hŷn, grwpiau cymunedol ac eraill, ynghyd â thystiolaeth a dadansoddiad a gynhaliwyd gan fy swyddfa.Mae Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru yn credu bod angen i Lywodraeth Cymru eu cymryd, ac maent hefyd wedi tynnu sylw at feysydd gweithredu gan gyrff cyhoeddus ac eraill, yn ogystal â nodi rhai o'r meysydd lle mae Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru yn gweithredu ac yn gweithio. gydag eraill i sicrhau newid.
Mae'n amlwg o'r ymgysylltiad â phobl hŷn bod llawer yn parhau i ddioddef amgylchiadau anodd dros ben oherwydd y pandemig, sydd wedi tynnu eu baw ac wedi gadael rhai yn poeni am yr hyn sydd gan y dyfodol a heb yr hyder sydd ei angen i fynd o gwmpas ac ailgysylltu ag ef. eu cymunedau.
Mae Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru hefyd wedi bod yn pryderu, ac yn parhau i fod felly, i ba raddau y mae hawliau pobl hŷn wedi cael eu gwarchod a'r angen i sicrhau bod hawliau sydd wedi'u dileu yn cael eu hadfer.
Er gwaethaf yr amgylchiadau anodd hyn, mae'r pandemig hefyd wedi dangos rhai o'r goreuon pwy ydym ni.
Maent wedi clywed cymaint o straeon ysbrydoledig am sut mae pobl wedi bod yn helpu ei gilydd, am y ffordd y mae sefydliadau cymunedol a llawer o gyrff cyhoeddus wedi ymateb yn gyflym i'r hyn sydd ei angen ac wedi bod yn greadigol wrth ddod o hyd i ffyrdd newydd o gyrraedd, cysylltu a helpu. Mae'n hanfodol ein bod yn harneisio'r profiadau cadarnhaol hyn i gam nesaf y pandemig ac yn ymgysylltu ac yn galluogi pobl hŷn i chwarae eu rhan mewn adferiad o Covid-19 sy'n defnyddio profiad ac arbenigedd pob cenhedlaeth ac yn cymryd y camau nesaf gyda'n gilydd.
Mae cyfnod o ansicrwydd a her o'n blaenau, ac mae angen i ni sicrhau bod gwersi yn cael eu dysgu o brofiadau'r ychydig fisoedd diwethaf.
Mae angen amddiffyn hawliau pobl hŷn yn well, a lle maen nhw wedi cael eu dileu, eu hadfer. Rhaid peidio â chaniatáu i'r gwaharddiad y mae llawer o bobl hŷn wedi'i brofi a'i deimlo.
Mae angen cefnogi'r rhai sydd wedi dioddef colli anwyliaid wrth iddynt alaru, ac ail-unwyd y rhai sydd wedi'u cadw ar wahân i anwyliaid. Wrth i gynlluniau gael eu gwneud ar draws y Llywodraeth a chyrff cyhoeddus i drosglwyddo o’r cam hwn o’r pandemig, rhaid i’r addewid fod i ‘adael neb ar ôl’.
Bydd Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru yn cynnal trafodaeth a dadl ar-lein ar ‘Gadael neb ar ôl’ ar Ddiwrnod Rhyngwladol Pobl Hŷn, Dydd Iau 1af Hydref 10am - hanner dydd.
Pwy yw Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru?
Mae Comisiynydd Pobl Hŷn Cymru yn amddiffyn ac yn hyrwyddo hawliau pobl hŷn ledled Cymru, gan graffu a dylanwadu ar ystod eang o bolisi ac arfer i wella eu bywydau. Yn darparu help a chefnogaeth yn uniongyrchol i bobl hŷn trwy'r tîm gwaith achos ac yn gweithio i rymuso pobl hŷn a sicrhau bod eu lleisiau'n cael eu clywed a'u gweithredu. Yn sail i rôl y Comisiynydd mae set o bwerau cyfreithiol unigryw i'w cefnogi wrth adolygu gwaith cyrff cyhoeddus a'u dwyn i gyfrif pan fo angen.
Mae'r Comisiynydd yn gweithredu i roi diwedd ar ragfarn ar sail oed a gwahaniaethu ar sail oedran, atal cam-drin pobl hŷn a galluogi pawb i heneiddio'n dda. Mae'r Comisiynydd eisiau i Gymru fod y lle gorau yn y byd i heneiddio.
